Having moved around the world for most of her life, living in Brussels, Egypt, Greece and England, her experience of different cultures has most certainly influenced her music.Natachas first break came when she sang on Balearic beat crew !Loca¡s club hit Timbal, and was drawn into the Jah Wobble circle, singing and co-writing with his just-forming band Invaders of the Heart. (She has recently worked with Wobble again, on the 2002 Wobble/Temple of Sound album Shout At The Devil). She also met Transglobal Underground, the London-based multicultural collective who, in blending electronica, dub, hip-hop and funk with Indian, African and Middle Eastern musical forms, were significant role models for todays world-dance phenomenon. The encounter was to turn into a long-standing, happy association. First guesting with them in 1991, two years later she became a member of the core quartet of Transglobal, as lead singer and belly-dancer (the latter not some kind of limp tourist-pleasing wiggle but the real raq sharki). A couple of years later, it was the bands Tim Whelan, Hamid ManTu and Nick Page (a.k.a. Count Dubulah, now of Temple of Sound) who helped her to make her first solo album, Diaspora. il y a 30 ans, personne n'aurait parié 1 dinar algérien ou 1 dirham marocain, voire 1 livre égyptienne, sur des musiques maghrébo-orientales condamnées à tournée en rond dans la communauté, tapies au fond de nombreux cafés tenus majoritairement par des kabyles.
dans ces lieux de vie underground, connus des seuls immigrés nord-africains, des chanteurs à orchestration minimaliste, faute d'espace, à l'image d'1 dahmane el harrachi ou d'une cheikha rimiti, faisaient pleurer dans leur bière (ou rigoler dans leur ricard) des travailleurs célibataires endimanchés venu là humer, la mine nostalgique, l'air du pays natal.
en janvier 1986, presque par effraction, à travers un festival à bobigny (93: seine-saint-denis, région parisienne : ile-de-france, en france), le raï entrait dans "le paysage musical français".
il servira de détonateur, après l'ouverture de quelques portes, auparavent (année 70), par des artistes kabyles comme idir, lounès matoub, aït-menguellet ou takfarinas. décomplexés, des beurs, à l'enseigne de faudel ou du groupe swat el atlas, se sont mis à s'attacher à la musique "ringarde" des parents, n'hésitant pas à piocher dans leur collection pour réécouter faïrouz ou warda. des jeunes loups des consoles et des platines, ainsi que des chanteurs et des chanteuses, auréolés d'une double culture, algériens comme khaled, mami, fadéla et sahraoui, zahouania, iness mêzel ou hasni, libano-egyptiens comme arm diab, nawal al zoughbi ou tamer & shereen, remettent au goût du jour un patrimoine qui ne demandait qu'à renaître.
d'autres donnent une dimension à des titres qui, autrement, étaient condamnés à demeurer dans les replis les plus profonds de la mémoire collective. qu'aurait été "ya rayah" de dahmane el harrachi sans sa reprise par rachid taha ? quel aurait été le destin, autre que communautaire, de "ghir el baroud" de rimitti si l'orchestre national de barbès ne l'avait pas relifté sous l'intitulé "alaoui" ?
après le couscous (nourriture authentique berbère, rappelons-le), 1er plat préféré des français, des musiques ont fini par suivre (enfin, presque) et retenir sur les pistes de danses mondiales.
aujourd'hui, la france et bien d'autres nations s'"éraïent", "chaâbient", "berbérisent", et se "jeelisent" ou s'agitent façon "new bled".
