1812 Overture (tchaikovsky) the year 1812, festival overture in e flat major, op. 49, popularly known as the 1812 overture (french: ouverture solennelle, l'année 1812, russian: Торжественная увертюра «1812 год», festival overture the year 1812) is an overture written by russian composer pyotr ilyich tchaikovsky in 1880 to commemorate russia's defense of moscow against napoleon's advancing grande armée at the battle of borodino in 1812. the overture debuted in the cathedral of christ the saviour in moscow on august 20, 1882 in the gregorian or ns calendar; the date in the julian or os calendar was august 8. the overture is best known for its climactic volley of cannon fire and ringing chimes.
on his 1891 visit to the united states, tchaikovsky conducted the piece at the dedication of carnegie hall in new york city. while this piece has little connection with united states history besides the war of 1812 diverting the british, freeing napoleon to attack russia, it is often a staple at fourth of july celebrations, such as the annual show by the boston pops and at washington dc's annual program called a capitol fourth.

since the partition of india in august 1947, which resulted in the creation of the republic of india and the islamic republic of pakistan, there have been three major wars, one minor war and numerous armed skirmishes between the two countries. in each case, except the indo-pakistani war of 1971, where the dispute concerned east pakistan, the casus belli was the disputed region of kashmir.
the partition of india came about in the aftermath of world war ii, when both britain and british india were dealing with the economic stresses caused by the war and its demobilization.
it was the intention of those who wished for a muslim state to come from british india to have a clean partition between independent and equal "pakistan" and "hindustan" once independence came. the partition itself, according to leading politicians such as mohammed ali jinnah, leader of the all india muslim league, and jawaharlal nehru, leader of the indian national congress, should have resulted in peaceful relations. however, the partition of british india into india and pakistan in 1947 did not divide the nations cleanly along religious lines. nearly 50 percent of the muslim population of british india remained in india. inter-communal violence between hindus, sikhs, and muslims resulted in between 500,000 to 1 million casualties.
princely-ruled territories, such as kashmir and hyderabad, were also involved in partition. rulers of these territories had the choice of joining india or pakistan.the ruler of kashmir, which had a muslim majority population, joined india by signing the instrument of accession and india acquired hyderabad in accordance with the wishes of the people of hyderabad. however, pakistan laid its claim on kashmir and thus it became the main point of conflict.
inherit the wind is a play by jerome lawrence and robert edwin lee. the play, which debuted in 1955, is a parable that fictionalizes the 1925 scopes "monkey" trial as a means to discuss the then-contemporary mccarthy trials.
inherit the wind opened with actors paul muni, ed begley and tony randall under the direction of margo jones on january 10, 1955. it debuted at broadway's national theatre on april 21, 1955. it played on broadway until june 22, 1957. it was revived on broadway twice: april 4, 1996 - may 12, 1996 and april 12, 2007 - july 8, 2007. the 1996 revival starred george c. scott as drummond and charles durning as brady. in april, scott had to leave the show mid-performance due to ill health and was replaced by tony randall for that day. his illness finally led to the revival's closure. christopher plummer and brian dennehy starred in the 2007 revival. kevin spacey (henry drummond) and david troughton (matthew harrison brady) starred in a 2009 revival at the old vic in london.
in the 1990s jason miller and malachy mccourt starred in the philadelphia production that broke that city's long run records.
